Buying a Horse to Race in Dubai in 2026/27: What to Buy and When
The season has started. The Carnival opens on 6 November. Your cousin has already chosen the racing colours. Here is what to buy, where to buy it this autumn, and how long it really takes to get to Meydan.
A light-hearted look at the horse world. Layla, her Cousin Who Has Seen One Race and the family group chat are invented. Facts are sourced at the end. No betting tips, nothing here is financial or legal advice, and no horse in this article is for sale.
To race in the 2026/27 UAE season, buy a sound horse already in training, now, with form or a rating that fits real UAE races and a clear surface plan: turf or dirt. The autumn sales in Europe are on right now. Allow time for vetting, an import permit, the flight and settling, so most new arrivals aim at the second half of the season, which ends with the Dubai World Cup on 27 March 2027.
Every October, somebody in a family group chat types: "We should have a horse in Dubai this year." Eleven people reply with a thumbs up. Nobody replies with a timeline.
Layla (invented, 38, runs a logistics firm, owns a very good spreadsheet) typed the message. Her Cousin Who Has Seen One Race (also invented) replied first: "Get a fast one." This article is everything that should have come after "get a fast one".
It works the same whether you live in Dubai, Riyadh, London, Mumbai, Hong Kong or New York. The horse goes to Dubai. You do not have to.
When does the 2026/27 UAE season run, and what are the big nights?
The season opened on 22 October 2026 and runs to the Dubai World Cup at Meydan on Saturday 27 March 2027. Meydan's Dubai Racing Carnival opens on Friday 6 November, with around 16 meetings.
| Date | What is on | The group chat says |
|---|---|---|
| Thu 22 Oct 2026 | Season opens, Abu Dhabi | "Are we late?" |
| Fri 6 Nov 2026 | Dubai Racing Carnival opens, Meydan | "Is our horse running?" (No. You have not bought it yet.) |
| Fri 18 Dec 2026 | Festive Friday, Meydan | "Christmas jumper or kandura?" |
| Fri 22 Jan 2027 | Fashion Friday, Meydan | The cousin buys a hat. |
| 5 to 6 Feb 2027 | Saudi Cup meeting, Riyadh | "Can we go to both?" |
| Sun 7 Feb 2027 | Abu Dhabi Gold Cup (reported) | "Is that a real gold cup?" |
| Sat 27 Feb 2027 | Emirates Super Saturday, Meydan | "This is the big one?" (Nearly.) |
| Sat 27 Mar 2027 | Dubai World Cup night, Meydan | Silence. Everyone is dressing. |
The ERA has reportedly scheduled 64 meetings across 5 racecourses: Meydan, Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Jebel Ali and Sharjah. Always check the official fixtures before you plan anything. More detail is in our Dubai Racing Carnival guide and first-season owner's guide.
Is it too late to buy a horse for this season?
No, but it is too late to be slow. A horse bought in late October or November still has a lot to do before its first UAE run, so the realistic target for most new arrivals is the second half of the season, from late January to March.
Think of it like a wedding. The date is fixed. The guest list is optimistic. And there is always one piece of paper nobody knew was needed.
Between the hammer and the first race, a horse needs:
- Vetting before you buy, by a vet working for you.
- Payment and insurance from the moment it is yours.
- An import permit from the UAE Ministry of Climate Change and Environment, granted before the horse leaves.
- Export health papers and blood tests in the country it is leaving.
- A flight. Horses come into the UAE by air only.
- Arrival rules and settling. For Carnival horses, the terms reportedly keep horses that travelled more than 6 hours in their stalls for at least 48 hours after landing. Then the horse needs time to adjust to the heat, the routine and the trainer.
- Registration and a rating, so the trainer can enter it in the right races.
Every horse and every route is different, so we ask the shipper for a timeline before you buy. If the answer makes the Super Saturday plan look silly, we pick a different race or a different horse. We do not pick a different truth.
What kind of horse should I buy to race in Dubai?
For this season, almost always a horse already in training: sound, with form or a rating that fits the UAE races you are aiming at, a clear surface plan, and a temperament that copes with travel.
1. A horse in training, not a project
A yearling or a foal will not race this season. A horse in training already knows its job. You can see its form, its rating and how it races. That is what you need with five months to go. Our guide yearling, breeze-up or horse in training explains why, with real prices.
2. A rating that fits real races
In the UAE, the ERA's handicapper gives each horse a rating, and many races are framed for set rating bands. The richest Carnival races usually need a high-class horse. Domestic meetings at Jebel Ali, Sharjah, Al Ain and Abu Dhabi offer races across a wider range of ratings.
The smartest buy is not the best horse you can afford. It is the horse that fits the most races you can actually enter. A horse rated just right for a series of races may get far more starts than a slightly better horse that runs into the very best every time. Ask a licensed UAE trainer which races fit a horse before you bid.
The Cousin Who Has Seen One Race wants "a World Cup horse". So does everybody. There are very few of them, they are rarely for sale, and when they are, the price makes the group chat go quiet for a week.
3. A surface plan: turf or dirt
Meydan has both a turf course and a dirt track. Jebel Ali and Sharjah race on dirt. Abu Dhabi is known for turf. Many European horses have only raced on turf. Some take to dirt well; some do not like the kickback of sand in the face and say so in the only way a horse can: by finishing tenth.
So the honest rule is: a turf horse with turf form is a known quantity on turf. A turf horse "who might like dirt" is a question. Questions are fine if the price reflects them. Our Breeders' Cup lessons for buyers look at turf, dirt and travel in more detail.
4. Distance and age
Look at the distances of the races you want, then buy a horse that already races well at that trip. An older, settled horse often travels and adapts better than a nervous young one. Three-year-olds have their own UAE races, including the UAE 2000 Guineas and the UAE Derby, but they are a specialist target and the conditions change, so read them before you bid.
Ages, quickly: horses bred in the Northern Hemisphere add a year on 1 January; horses bred in the Southern Hemisphere, such as Australia, add a year on 1 August. Some races for young horses give Southern Hemisphere-breds a weight allowance. Check the race conditions.
5. Sound, and good at travelling
Clean vetting matters more than ever when a horse is about to fly a long way and race in a new climate. So does temperament. A horse who boxes calmly, eats well away from home and does not take the flight personally is worth a lot to a Dubai plan. See racehorse vetting explained.
6. Or: a purebred Arabian
The UAE has one of the world's biggest programmes of races for purebred Arabians. If your family's heart is with the Arabian horse, that is a different and very rewarding route. See how to buy a purebred Arabian.
Where can I buy a horse in training this autumn?
The big European horses-in-training sales are happening now, and private sales run all year. We source from sales and sellers all over the world, not one country.
| Where | When (2026, as listed) | Why it matters for Dubai |
|---|---|---|
| Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training, Newmarket | 26 to 29 October | Europe's biggest sale of horses already racing. Timing can still work for the second half of the UAE season. |
| Goffs Autumn HIT and Yearling Sale, Ireland | 2 to 5 November | Another large pool of horses in training, a week later. |
| Arqana Autumn Sale, Deauville | Mid-November (listed 16 to 19 November) | French-raced horses, including some horses in training. |
| Private purchase, worldwide | Any time | Often the fastest route: a known horse, vetted and flown on a plan that suits it. |
Buying at a sale from abroad needs registration with the sale company before you bid, at least 7 days ahead at Tattersalls. If the timing is tight, a private purchase may be the better route. See buying at Tattersalls from overseas, buying a proven horse privately and our horses in training sales guide.
Thinking longer term, for next season or for breeding? The Tattersalls December Sales guide covers foals, mares and yearlings.

What does the timeline from sale to Meydan look like?
Here is how we plan a horse bought this autumn. The fixed dates come from published schedules; the rest is our method, not a rule, and every horse is different.
| When | What happens | Layla does | The cousin does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Now (late Oct) | Brief, budget, target races. Trainer conversation. Shortlist. | Sends a brief with numbers. | Sends a video of a horse winning in 2009. |
| Sale or private deal | Vetting, then buy. Insure at once. | Signs. | Designs a celebration. |
| Next few weeks | Import permit, tests, export papers, flight booked. | Checks the permit is approved, not "hoped for". | Asks if the horse can fly with him. |
| Arrival | Arrival rules, then settling with the trainer. | Waits. | Does not wait. |
| First entry | When the trainer says the horse is ready, not before. | Trusts the trainer. | Has opinions about the jockey. |
| Late Jan to Mar 2027 | Racing, review, adjust. | Thanks the groom first. | Thanks the groom second. Progress. |
Who trains the horse, and what paperwork do I need?
A trainer licensed by the Emirates Racing Authority trains the horse. You register as an owner with the ERA, usually guided by the trainer. You do not have to live in the UAE.
- The trainer: the ERA licenses every trainer, jockey and stable worker in the UAE. Choose one whose yard, reporting style and race plan suit your horse. Our 12 questions to ask a trainer help.
- Owner registration: with the ERA. Ask what you need to provide and the fee, in writing.
- Racing colours: registered for you. Layla wanted plain gold. Many people before her had the same idea.
- Owners abroad: the ERA describes an International Stable at Meydan for owners who are not UAE residents.
Licensed trainers train; we help you choose one, place the horse and supervise the plan. More in your first 90 days as an owner.
What will it cost, and what should I ask for in writing?
Costs vary by horse, trainer and route, so we will not guess. Ask for each one in writing before the horse travels.
- The horse: price, sale-house charges and any tax.
- Vetting: X-rays, a wind scope and blood tests.
- Export and import: permit, health papers, flight and arrival costs.
- Training: the monthly fee and exactly what it includes.
- Extras: vet, farrier, race-day transport, insurance.
- The summer plan: the UAE season ends in March. The horse then flies back for summer racing in Europe, stays in the UAE, or is sold. Each option has a cost. Decide early.
Our racehorse management service starts from US$2,000 per horse per month. For full worked examples, see what a racehorse really costs.
Owning a racehorse is a passion, not a way to make money. Prize money is a lovely surprise, not a business plan. Layla's spreadsheet has a row for it. The row says "bonus".
A plain word before you buy
A runner in Dubai this season is very achievable if you start now, buy a horse that fits real races, and let the timeline be honest. Most disappointments we see are not about the horse. They are about buying the wrong type of horse, or buying the right one too late.
We cannot promise a win, a place, a prize or a rating. Nobody honest can, and we never give betting tips. What we can promise is a careful worldwide search, an independent vet, clear written terms, a licensed trainer you have chosen, and plain reports from the sale to Meydan, by email, in your time zone.
Layla now has a timeline. The group chat has been renamed "Horse (serious)". The cousin has been made admin of a separate group called "Horse (hats)". Everyone is happier.

Frequently asked questions
Is it too late to buy a horse for the 2026/27 Dubai season?
Not if you buy soon and plan realistically. The season runs to the Dubai World Cup on 27 March 2027. A horse bought in late October or November still needs vetting, an import permit, a flight and time to settle, so most new arrivals aim at races in the second half of the season.
What kind of horse should I buy to race in Dubai?
Usually a sound horse already in training, with form or a rating that fits the races you are aiming at, and a profile for the surface it will race on: turf or dirt. Ask a licensed UAE trainer which races fit before you buy.
Where can I buy a horse in training this autumn?
Autumn horses-in-training sales in Europe, such as Tattersalls in Newmarket (26 to 29 October 2026) and Goffs in Ireland (listed for 2 to 5 November 2026), plus private purchases from sellers worldwide.
Can a European turf horse race on dirt in Dubai?
Some do well and some do not. A horse that has never raced on dirt is a question, not an answer. Meydan has both turf and dirt, so a turf horse can stay on turf.
Does Silk Road Bloodstock train horses?
No. Licensed trainers train. We help you buy the horse, choose a licensed UAE trainer, place the horse and supervise the plan.
