Bahrain Turf Series 2026-27: Buying a Horse in Time
Fourteen turf handicaps, US$80,000 to US$100,000 a race, for horses rated 80 and up. The racing starts on 18 December. The deadline that matters is much sooner: stabling nominations close on Thursday 5 November.
A light-hearted look at the horse world. Yousef and his cousin are invented. Facts are sourced at the end. No betting tips, nothing here is financial or legal advice, and no horse in this article is for sale.
The 2026-27 Bahrain Turf Series has 14 turf handicaps for horses rated 80 and above, from 18 December 2026 to the King's Cup Festival in March 2027, worth US$80,000 a race (US$100,000 for the three finals). Stabling nominations close on Thursday 5 November 2026. If you want a runner, buy a sound, rated horse in training now, at the autumn sales or privately, line up a licensed trainer before you bid, and get the import paperwork moving the same week.
Yousef (invented, 39, logistics, owns three watches and is on time for nothing) heard about the Bahrain Turf Series at a dinner in October. "Fourteen races," he said. "In December. Plenty of time." His cousin, who reads the small print for a living, asked one question: "When do nominations close?"
The answer is 5 November. That changes the plan from "plenty of time" to "this week". This guide is for anyone, in Manama, Riyadh, Kuwait, Doha, Muscat, London or anywhere else, who wants a horse in that series and would rather not find out about the deadline on 6 November.
What is the Bahrain Turf Series, and why do owners like it?
It is a winter series of handicaps on turf at the Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club, written for good handicappers rated 80 to 100. That is the band a large share of horses in training in Europe sit in, which makes it one of the most realistic ways to race a Gulf winter with a horse you can actually buy.
For 2026-27 the series grows to 14 races in three divisions: sprint, a new mile division, and middle distance. Last season, Bahraini-trained and internationally trained runners won six series races each, so a horse coming in from abroad for the winter is not a tourist. It is a serious contender.
It also sits inside Bahrain's biggest season yet. This is the 50th season of the Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club, with 30 race dates from 30 October 2026 to 16 April 2027, and Bahrain's first Group 1, the US$1.5 million Bahrain International Trophy over 2,000 metres on 13 November. For more on racing in Bahrain itself, see our guide for owners racing in Bahrain.
What are the dates, distances and prize money?
Five race days, December to March. Every race is a handicap on turf. These are the dates as listed by the Bahrain Turf Club; always check the official site before you plan.
| Date | Series races | Rating band | Prize per race |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fri 18 Dec 2026 | 1,000m (straight), 1,600m, 2,000m | 84-100 | US$80,000 |
| Sat 2 Jan 2027 | 1,200m (straight), 1,600m, 2,000m | 80-100 | US$80,000 |
| Thu 28 Jan 2027 | 1,200m (straight), 1,600m, 2,000m | 80-100 | US$80,000 |
| Thu 18 Feb 2027 | 1,000m (straight), 1,800m | 80-100 | US$80,000 |
| Thu 4 Mar 2027 | 1,200m (straight), 1,600m, 2,000m (King's Cup Festival) | 80-100 | US$100,000 |
In the US$80,000 races the winner gets US$48,000, then US$16,000, US$8,000, US$4,800 and US$3,200 down to fifth. In the three finals the winner gets US$60,000, then US$20,000, US$10,000, US$6,000 and US$4,000. Yousef's cousin points out that fifth place in a final still pays more than many races in Europe pay the winner. Yousef has started to listen.
Around the series, the season's big days include the Crown Prince's Cup (Group 3, 2,000m) on 29 January and the King's Cup (Group 3, 2,400m, US$400,000) on 5 March 2027.
Why does 5 November matter so much?
Because the horse needs a stable in Bahrain for the winter, and the club takes stabling nominations for the series until Thursday 5 November 2026. Before you nominate, the horse's import requirements and vaccinations must be in order.
That is ten days after the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale ends on 29 October, and the same week as the Goffs autumn sale in Ireland (listed 2 to 5 November). It is enough time, but only if the trainer, the paperwork and your budget are sorted before you buy, not after.
- Line up the trainer first. A licensed trainer in Bahrain, or a trainer abroad who ships horses for the series, should look at the shortlist before you bid. They make the nomination and know what the club needs.
- Ask the shipper now. Vaccinations and health tests have timing windows. A shipper who knows the route to Bahrain will tell you what can be done by when.
- Ask the club about support. The Bahrain Turf Club invites owners and trainers to email for details of conditions, the nomination procedure, shipping, subsidies and incentives. Get those answers in writing.
Missed it? Do not give up the winter. Ask the club what is still possible, look at the open Premier races, or point the horse at another Gulf season: see our guides for Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Dubai.
What kind of horse should I buy for the series?
A sound turf handicapper with an official rating that fits the band, proven at the trip of one division, who travels and settles well. Not the best horse you can afford: the horse that fits the most races.
1. The rating is the ticket
The first round is for horses rated 84 to 100, the rest for 80 to 100. A horse rated 101 is too good for the series; a horse rated 78 is not yet good enough. Ask what the horse's rating is today, and how its handicapper is likely to treat it after its next run. Our guide to reading a sales catalogue page shows where to find it.
2. Pick a division, then a horse
Sprints are over 1,000 and 1,200 metres on the straight, the mile division over 1,600 metres, and middle distance over 1,800 and 2,000 metres. A horse proven at one of those trips can run in several rounds of its division. A horse "who might get a mile" is a hope, and the series has no race for hopes.
3. Turf form, sound limbs
It is the Turf Series. Buy a horse with good turf form, and have an independent vet do X-rays and a wind scope before you bid. A winter of racing after a long flight is not the moment to discover an old problem. See racehorse vetting explained.
4. A good traveller
Calm to load, eats away from home, does not sulk. Ask the current trainer. They usually tell the truth if you ask the right question: "How did he travel last time?"
5. A plan for April
The season ends on 16 April. Then the horse stays, returns to Europe for summer racing, or is sold. Each has a cost. Decide before you buy.
Where can I buy a horse in time?
The autumn horses-in-training sales are on right now, and private sales run all year, worldwide. We search sales and sellers all over the world, not one country.
| Where | When (2026, as listed) | Why it matters for Bahrain |
|---|---|---|
| Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training, Newmarket | 26 to 29 October | Europe's biggest sale of horses already racing, many of them rated in the 80 to 100 band. Ends a week before the nomination deadline. |
| Goffs Autumn sale, Ireland | 2 to 5 November | More horses in training, but the same week as the deadline: line up the trainer and the club before the sale. |
| Private purchase, worldwide | Any time | Often the quickest route, and the only one if the sales are too tight. |
Buying at a European sale from abroad means registering with the sale company before you bid. See buying at Tattersalls from overseas, the Tattersalls Horses in Training Sale 2026 for Gulf buyers and buying a proven horse privately. We never pick lots in public; your shortlist is private.

What does the timeline look like?
Work back from 5 November, not forward from the sale. The fixed dates are published by the club; the rest is our planning method, and every horse is different.
| When | What happens | Yousef's cousin |
|---|---|---|
| Now | Budget, division, trainer. Shortlist from the sales and private sellers. | Sends a brief with numbers. |
| 26 Oct to 5 Nov | Independent vetting, then buy. Insure the horse the moment it is yours. | Signs, after reading it. |
| By Thu 5 Nov | Trainer submits the stabling nomination; import requirements and vaccinations in order. | Checks it was sent, not "nearly sent". |
| Nov to Dec | Health tests, flight, arrival, settling with the trainer. | Waits. Calmly. |
| 18 Dec onwards | Racing when the trainer says the horse is ready. Entries close at 10am Bahrain time on the Monday of race week. | Books a table for race night. |
What will it cost?
It depends on the horse, the trainer and the route, so we will not guess. Ask for every line in writing before the horse travels.
- The horse: price, sale-house charges and any tax on export. Budgets from US$50,000.
- Vetting: X-rays and a wind scope before you bid.
- Export, flight and import: ask the club what shipping support or subsidy applies this season.
- Training: the monthly fee and exactly what it includes.
- Extras: vet, farrier, insurance, race-day costs.
- After April: stay, fly back or sell.
- Our fee: 5% of the purchase price, minimum US$5,000, agreed in writing before we start.
For worked examples, see what a racehorse really costs, or try the cost calculator. Owning a racehorse is a passion, not a way to make money. The prize table is lovely to read. It is not a business plan.
A plain word before you buy
The Bahrain Turf Series is one of the most honest targets in Gulf racing: real prize money, a clear rating band, and horses of that level for sale right now. Most disappointments come from the calendar, not the horse. Start this week and the calendar is on your side.
We cannot promise a win, a place or a rating. Nobody honest can, and we never give betting tips. We can promise a careful worldwide search, an independent vet, clear written terms, a licensed trainer you have chosen, and plain reports by email, in your time zone. Licensed trainers train; we help you choose one, place the horse and supervise the plan.
