1. The Horses in Training Sale, 26–29 October
This is Europe's biggest sale of horses already racing. A horse with form and an official rating is easier to judge for the races you want, in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar or Hong Kong, than a young horse who has not run.
- Registration: Tattersalls asks new buyers to register at least 7 days before the sale, and an agent can only bid for you once a Purchasers Authorisation is accepted. If you are not registered yet, email us at once. We ask Tattersalls what is still possible for you, such as a deposit agreed before bidding. If it is too late, route 2 below is often the answer.
- Payment: due straight after the purchase, paid by you directly to Tattersalls. Risk passes at the fall of the hammer, so we arrange insurance from that moment.
- Prices: at the 2025 sale the median was 15,000 guineas (1 guinea = £1.05). Better-rated horses cost much more. Last year's figures are not a promise for this year.
Step-by-step rules: how to buy at Tattersalls from overseas. Which horse type fits you: horses in training for sale.
2. Buying a horse privately after it did not sell
Some horses do not reach the seller's reserve and leave the ring unsold. Often the owner still wants to sell, and a quiet, serious offer straight after the sale can work for both sides.
- We watch the sale for you and note the unsold horses that fit your brief.
- We approach the seller or their consignor with your OK, and check whether the deal must be done through Tattersalls under its Conditions of Sale.
- Vetting comes first. An independent vet works for you before anything is signed.
- You pay the seller (or Tattersalls) directly. Your money never goes through us.
Honest note: there is no promise that a horse will be for sale, or at what price. Some owners take their horse home instead. More on this route: buying a proven racehorse privately.
3. The December Sales, 23 November to 3 December
Foals, mares in foal, fillies out of training and some yearlings. This is where many Gulf studs find their next mare. A mare or foal bought in December often stays in Europe for a while before it flies, and we plan that with you.

Your budget, the country where the horse will race or live, and your goal. That is enough to start.
How we work for you
- Your brief. Budget, goal (race or breed), where the horse will live. Ten minutes by email, or a free 20-minute call.
- A private shortlist from the catalogue. We read every catalogue page and send you only the horses that fit. Only you see it.
- Inspection and independent vetting. We see the horses walk. An independent vet working for you reviews the X-rays and scopes in the Tattersalls Repository and examines the horse where allowed.
- Bidding in your name. We bid only up to your written limit. Not one guinea more without your clear "yes".
- After the hammer: insurance, the Pass Out, VAT paperwork for export, the export health certificate, the import permit for your country, and a professional shipper. See racehorse transport.
- Where the horse goes next. Licensed trainers train. We help you choose a licensed trainer or stud farm, and supervise the plan. See racehorse management.
At Tattersalls we act for you, the buyer, only, in line with the Bloodstock Industry Code of Practice. We tell you that in writing.
Fee and payment
- 5% of the purchase price, minimum US$5,000, agreed in writing before we bid or negotiate.
- You pay Tattersalls or the seller directly. Your money never goes through us.
- Vetting, insurance and shipping are quoted to you before you commit, and billed at cost.
- No promises of wins, prize money or resale value. Owning a racehorse is a passion, not a way to make money.

Questions buyers ask
Do I have to travel to Newmarket?
No. Most of our clients stay home. We send videos and vet notes by email, and bid in your name. If you want to come, buyers from outside the British Isles who spend 10,000 guineas or more may get travel help through Tattersalls' Inward Buyers' Initiative.
How fast do you reply?
The same day, Dubai time (GMT+4). In sale week, the earlier you email, the more horses we can check for you.
Will you tell me which horses to buy on this page?
No. We never publish lots. Your shortlist is private and made for your brief.
Do you only buy at Tattersalls?
No. We source the best horses from sales and private yards all over the world. If Goffs, Arqana or a private yard has a better horse for you, we tell you. See the sales we buy from.
