From Keeneland in October to Royal Ascot in June, these are the great meetings of the racing year. Pick the one you dream of, then work back to the day you need to buy.

When to buy for each meeting

Gulf winter (Carnival, Bahrain, Riyadh, Qatar): buy in October or November so the horse can travel, pass quarantine and settle. A horse bought at the October sale is the classic route.
Dubai World Cup night: buy by December or January at the latest. The best horses for that night are usually already in the Gulf by the new year.
Hong Kong: you need an HKJC import permit first. Then buy a horse that meets the rating and age rules.
Royal Ascot: buy in winter or early spring, either a proven horse privately or a two-year-old at the spring breeze-up sales.
