Thoroughbred sales figures: the official numbers, in one table

Every major thoroughbred auction publishes its own results. Here they are side by side: lots offered and sold, turnover, average, median and top price, each row linked to the sale company’s own page, with the date we checked it. Free to quote and to download.

Numbers are copied exactly as each sale company published them. A dash means the official page we read does not state that figure: we never estimate, and we never work out a clearance rate ourselves. No horse, lot, seller or buyer names. Top prices are public auction results, not horses for sale. Nothing here is financial advice.

30 sale results from 5 sale companies, 2024-2026, straight from the sale companies’ own pages. The median is the number to watch: half the horses sold for that or less.

One row per sale and year, UTF-8, 30 rows. Same numbers as the tables.

What the numbers mean for a buyer

  • Median, not average. A few very expensive horses pull the average up. The median is what a typical horse at that sale cost.
  • Sold of offered shows how hard it was to buy: when most horses sell, sellers have the upper hand and good horses rarely go cheap.
  • The price is only the start. Training, keep, insurance and the flight home add up. See what a racehorse really costs and the racehorse import cost calculator.
  • Each sale suits a different buyer. A horse in training can race this winter; a yearling is a year or more from its first run. Read the sales we buy from to pick yours.

How we make this table

  • Official only: Tattersalls figures are read from Tattersalls’ own statistics page, and the top price from its results summary, which must agree on sold, turnover and median. Other sale companies: the figures in their own closing report or results page; our script re-reads that page and keeps a figure only if the page states it.
  • 2026 rows come from our weekly bloodstock market note, where a figure is shown only if the sale company and one trade-press report both state it. New sales are added after each note.
  • Clearance (% sold) appears only where the sale company states it; Tattersalls’ reports often cover several books at once, so we leave it out there and show offered and sold instead.
  • Not yet included: Goffs (Orby Sale (Books 1-2), November Foal Sale, December NH Sale): goffs.com refuses automated reading (HTTP 403 on 25 Oct 2026), so we could not check the official figures ourselves. Added once the official page can be read.

Frequently asked questions

Where do these thoroughbred sales figures come from?

From each sale company’s own published results: Tattersalls’ statistics and results pages, and the closing reports or results pages of Arqana, Keeneland, Fasig-Tipton and Inglis. Every row links to its source and shows the date we checked it. If a page does not state a figure, the table shows a dash.

Can I use this data in an article or report?

Yes. The table and the CSV are free to use under CC BY 4.0. Credit “Source: Silk Road Bloodstock market data” with a link to this page, and cite the sale company’s own page for the original figure.

What is the difference between the average and the median price?

The average is the total spent divided by the horses sold, so a few very expensive horses pull it up. The median is the middle price: half the horses sold for that or less. For most budgets the median is the better guide.
